Is the Abortion Pill Reversible?

Perhaps you’re worried about the finality of the abortion pill, or even have already begun the abortion pill procedure and have changed your mind about your pregnancy. Thankfully, the abortion pill has the potential to be reversed.

Abortion pill reversal involves counteracting the effects of the abortion pill in order to move forward with the healthy development of the pregnancy. Before we understand abortion pill reversal, let’s unpack how the abortion pill acts to terminate a pregnancy.

How Does the Abortion Pill Work?

The abortion pill is used to terminate a pregnancy in the first 10 weeks of gestation. This way of termination is referred to as a chemical or medical abortion.

The abortion pill is a two-pill regimen using mifepristone and misoprostol. The first pill taken is mifepristone, which blocks the womb’s ability from absorbing the pregnancy hormone called progesterone. Progesterone is responsible for fetal growth and development. Without progesterone, the pregnancy will not advance and will terminate.

When the pregnancy has ended, typically between 24 to 48 hours later, misoprostol is the next medication administered. Misoprostol forces the uterus to contract, bleed, and expel the terminated fetal tissue.

What Can I Expect With Abortion Pill Reversal?

The abortion pill can only be reversed if the process of abortion pill reversal is begun within 24 hours of taking the first pill, mifepristone. To reverse the actions of the first abortion pill, a large amount of progesterone will be administered to counteract the suppressing effects on fetal development from the abortion pill.

What are the risks related to abortion pill reversal?

There are no risks tethered to the abortion pill reversal. Progesterone is safe and widely used for pregnancy care, and studies show that the abortion pill reversal process has had no connection to any birth defects or complications in pregnancy.
