Pregnancy Confirmation Services
Willow Women’s Center offers pregnancy confirmation through no-cost limited obstetrical ultrasounds. If you have a positive pregnancy test at Willow, your next step is to have an ultrasound.
how do ultrasounds work?
Ultrasound uses high frequency sound waves and their echoes which in turn produce a picture which is projected onto a screen. Ultrasound has been used for many decades without any harmful side effects to women or their pregnancies. With ultrasound, the gestational sac can be seen as early as 4 ½ weeks. The embryo can be seen and measured by 5 ½ weeks.
Why do I need an ultrasound?
There are three reasons an ultrasound is necessary after a positive pregnancy test:
To check whether you have a viable pregnancy.
Did you know that one in five positive pregnancy tests ends in natural miscarriage? A urine pregnancy test cannot confirm a viable pregnancy as hCG, the pregnancy hormone, may be present in the urine of a woman for up to 6-8 weeks after a miscarriage. To confirm viability, we need to visualize the fetal heartbeat within the uterus.
To see where your pregnancy is located.
A healthy pregnancy occurs when the fertilized egg implants in the uterus. Some fertilized eggs do not make it out of the fallopian tubes and can cause the tube to rupture as the pregnancy grows larger. This is called an ectopic pregnancy. An ultrasound can indicate if you may have an ectopic pregnancy and if you should seek immediate medical attention.
To inform you of how far along you are.
How far along you are determines the kinds of abortion procedures that are available to you or determines whether you need to start prenatal care, depending on the option you choose for your unexpected pregnancy. During an ultrasound, we will take measurements to estimate the gestational age and determine an accurate due date.
Our highly trained and experienced medical staff will be glad to provide you with a no-cost and confidential ultrasound. You will then be provided with accurate analysis and information on your pregnancy status, as well as the information and referrals, if they are necessary.
