As you explore your options, we recommend receiving an ultrasound scan and STD testing. Not only will these screenings provide you with valuable information regarding your pregnancy, but they will also ensure that you’re not at an increased risk for abortion complications.

Do I need an ultrasound before an abortion?
First, what is an ultrasound scan? Ultrasound scans use high-frequency sound waves to create an image of what’s happening inside the body, often to provide information about a health condition, including pregnancy.
You might be wondering, “If I want to terminate my pregnancy, why would I need an ultrasound?” Well, ultrasounds are used to determine the age, location, and viability of a pregnancy. The factors are crucial as you decide if abortion is right for you.
The age of your pregnancy, revealed by an ultrasound scan, will help you determine what type of abortion procedure you are eligible for. For example, women are only eligible to take the abortion pill within the first 10 weeks of pregnancy. After that point, you’ll only be eligible for a surgical abortion procedure.
An ultrasound scan will also reveal whether or not your pregnancy is viable, or in other words, whether your pregnancy has a reasonable chance of making it to term and surviving outside of the womb. If you are pregnant with a nonviable pregnancy, a typical abortion procedure won’t be an option and you’ll forego the stress that comes with deciding if abortion is right for you.
Finally, getting an ultrasound scan will rule out the possibility of an ectopic pregnancy, a condition that’s fatal if left untreated. It may help determine if you are at an increased risk for abortion complications including hemorrhaging, infections, and sepsis.
Why do I need an STD/STI test before an abortion?
Because STDs can be present without any symptoms, it’s essential to receive STD/STI testing, you may be infected without even knowing it. If left untreated, STDs can lead to health complications, including cancer, damage to internal organs, fertility issues, and other fatal diseases.
Additionally, accessing an abortion while infected with an STD can lead to serious infections, septic shock, and an increased risk of Pelvic Inflammatory Disease (PID). PID can lead to fertility issues, chronic pain, abscesses, and more.
